10 Simple Tips for Extending the Battery Life of Vape Pens

It’s extremely frustrating, isn’t it?

You’re just about to unwind after a long day of work and dealing with annoying people, when your vaping battery dies on you. And it’s not like you’ve been using it AT ALL that day! You just took a few puffs… and the damn thing went out of power on you.

But you’re not alone here…

Most people can’t get their vaporizer battery to last for a long time. It’s just one of those things – they don’t pay attention to maintenance (as with most electronic devices and battery-operated products, right?) and proper care, and they end up with an e-juice vape pen croaking and biting the dust far sooner than it should.

It doesn’t have to be this way for you, though.

In this post, I’ll discuss how to extend battery lifespan for vape pens and devices with built-in batteries. [So we will not be discussing external 18650 batteries here]. These are the same type of battery cells that your mobile phone battery uses – lithium batteries – so they should have the same type of performance.

That is, they should last more than a month… and hold a charge for more than 30 minutes.

So if you don’t have a lot of time, here are 10 ways to extend the life of your e-cig battery:

  1. Follow manufacturer charging instructions
  2. Unplug your vape device from charger after charging
  3. Don’t charge to 100% if you can avoid it
  4. Never fully drain your lithium-ion (especially older batteries)
  5. Use your vape device regularly
  6. Store your vape pen in a cool, dry, and clean place
  7. Turn off your vaporizer when not using it
  8. Use the right charger if you can (from the manufacturer)
  9. Charge the battery before storing for a long time
  10. Avoid damage to charging port and threads

Do all of these things and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the uptick in lifespan and full charge holding in your vape pen battery.

Okay, let’s look at the details of these simple tips.

1. Follow charging instructions

Regardless of the vape kit you own, it will have came with a set of charging instructions. These differ from manufacturer to manufacturer… so don’t guess at them. Read the instructions. They’ll tell you all you need to know about the capacity (is it a 400 mAh battery or a 2000 mAh battery), and the voltage (how much power and energy it can output), but also if you should use the accompanying charger exclusively and how to avoid a short circuit.

Also, if the pen comes without charging instructions, you might want to order from a different manufacturer next time.

2. Unplug your e-cig battery after charging

Overcharging can lead to damage, not just in the battery but also in the charger. And it can make your e-cig battery more prone to a short circuit.

Your battery’s life will be significantly extended if you just remember that you’ve plugged it in before it spends a night connected to a power source. There are smart chargers out there that will cut the energy input when on full, but making a habit out of double-checking is always a good idea.

3. Avoid charging to 100%

If you can, that is.

Most lithium ion batteries perform better if they’re not overstretched. When fully charged, they can suffer from high voltage stress. That’s the main reason why you’ll want to avoid pushing them to their limit.

4. Never completely drain your e-cig battery

You want to avoid the highs AND The lows when it comes to battery charge. So instead of waiting for the last minute to plug your electronic cigarette, do it when it’s at a 25% to 30% capacity. Most users don’t follow this piece of information, which is why their long term vaporizer end up lasting less than a fortnight. Leaving a small amount of charge in a built-in battery is the best thing you can do, no matter the different brands you’re using.

Do this, and you will significantly extend the life of your battery.

5. Use your vaporizer regularly

If you don’t use your vaporizer every day, you’re of course damaging its ability to hold a charge. This will also affect the longevity of your battery. So try to give your unit a regular workout, even if it’s just for a short time every day.

6. Store your vaporizer safely

As in, not constantly in your pocket, right? Common sense!

Look, batteries are not too finicky. But they do like sensible environment. This means no high temperatures, no freezing temperatures, no extreme temperatures of any kind… and no dirt and no direct sunlight.

A cool place without extreme heat that’s dry and without moisture is the ticket here!

If you’re carrying your e-cig with you, keep it in a case. And make sure to not expose it to moisture or liquid spills. If this happens, make sure to give all the contact points and the USB connection (or threads if you have a 510 thread battery) a quality scrub with a cotton swab. Make sure to get into all those holes and nooks and crannies with that Q-Tip and soak up all the oils, liquid, and dirt because they will have a negative effect on the overall performance of your vaporizer. And leave it to dry for a short period (or a few hours, better safe than sorry).

7. Turn off your vape when not using it

And I don’t mean put it in sleep mode. I mean press that power button and turn it off if you’re not using it. Sleep mode is no good. Power button -> off is the way to go.

8. Use the right charger

For best battery life, you want to use the charger that came with the e-cig.

That’s because, in that case, you can be certain that it’s delivering the right amount of power that’s not going to damage the health of the battery. High quality manufacturers always make an addition of the charger to the vape kit. For example, I’d be surprised if a brand name vaporizer came without a dedicated charger.

9. Charge battery before long term storage

If you plan on not using your e-cig battery for a while, the right choice is to store it charged (but not overcharged). Storing an empty built-in battery can lead to breakdown of internal chemistry (regardless of the materials used), which will damage the health of your unit, reduce battery power, and make it difficult for it to function properly.

This storage shouldn’t last too long. As I said, to extend the life of a vaporizer battery, you can’t not use it for long periods of time.

10. Avoid damage to charging ports and threads

Be careful when plugging and unplugging from a charger. Unlike other electrical devices, ports on a e-cig battery are very sensitive so your best bet is to be very present when doing it. Sure, these ports will get damaged with frequent use (much like your 510-thread for cannabis carts), but my advice is to keep an eye on it so you can avoid that for as long as possible and enjoy the better performance of your vape setup.

And that’s all there is to it!

That’s how you get great battery life from every vape kit you purchase.

Your charger is amazing. I cheated and used it on two dead bats from another manufacturer and it revived them. Chargers I never seem to lose, vapes are another story…thanks for a terrific product.
