15 Ways to Get Rid of Weed Smell (Smoke AND Vapor)

The Kind Pen

Let’s say you’re half way through your cannabis session.

You’re at home in your living room… you’re chilling… your weed vape pen is working overtime on your favorite cannabis strain. Or, if you’re going completely OG, you’ve rolled up a spliff.

Suddenly, there’s a knock on your door.

Normally, you wouldn’t care – you’re a grown-ass adult, you can do what you want. That’s the best part of being an adult.

But… what if it’s your mom? Or your kid? Or – worse case scenario – your mother-in-law?

Now you’re flailing your arms in the air, like you’re fighting off an invasion of invisible ninjas. Trying to find a damp towel… a fan… a portal to another dimension.

Nothing helps… the deed is done.

The smell of cannabis is everywhere. No amount of air fresheners, open windows, or air filters will help you now.

You’re busted… when you should have been prepared.

When it comes to cannabis smell and overall marijuana odor – and the different ways of getting rid of it – half the battle is being prepared.

In this post, you’ll find 15 better ways for minimizing that distinct cannabis smell:

  1. Crack open that freaking window – get some fresh air in while you’re vaping or smoking
  2. Create a neat filter from dryer sheets, paper rolls, and a rubber band or two
  3. Light up a few candles during your session… and drop a bit of patchouli oil on the wax
  4. Incense sticks will work if you’re into recreational marijuana use… cause they cost a fortune
  5. Ceiling fans, ventilators, and an air conditioner can all help out, too…
  6. Crush some strong herbs with various scents to cover up the scent of weed
  7. White vinegar mixed with hot water will help out as well…
  8. Take a hot water shower while vaping… or just leave the water running
  9. A smoke filter… probably the easiest way to get rid of the smell of marijuana smoke
  10. Your freezer is an option, too – to find out the weird details, skip to #10
  11. Use air fresheners and essential oils… though they can create a pungent odor, too
  12. If all else fails, just step outside of your house to vape weed… open spaces will do the trick
  13. Have baking soda in the kitchen? It soaks up errant odors, especially in a small area
  14. Odor-absorbing gels are a fact of life now… start using them
  15. Bake cookies…bake batches and batches of cookies… at all times.

Let’s dig into the nitty-gritty of each method. But, before we do that, let’s take a look at one surefire way to kill the smell of weed in a flash… if you need to.

The Fastest Way to Get Rid of Marijuana Smell

So you lit one up at home and you need to get rid of the smell in 5 minutes otherwise your life is ruined?

There’s just one thing that you can do…

And no, it’s not air freshener… it’s not deodorant… it’s not scented candles.

What you need to do is burn a bag of popcorn. Like, accidentally. Just leave it in the microwave for a few minutes longer.

The unique smell will definitely cover everything else. The only downside? You can only do this once… otherwise you’ll end up looking like a moron who can’t operate a microwave.

So be sure to familiarize yourself with other options, too…

15 Ways to Hide Your Fragrant Transgression

Are you tired of getting into unwanted scenarios because you don’t know how to hide the smell of weed? Not to worry, you are in good hands. Most of the tips and tricks that I mention here are completely legit and can be used daily.

Okay, okay… I will admit that there will be maybe one or two that’ll make you chuckle and think “this guy has too much time on his hands”, but each scenario is completely doable — and it will help you get rid of the weed vape pen smell.

Trust me.

Now, let’s get into it.

#1 The Window Method – Crack It Open

image of a weed bong next to an open window
I mean… keep it simple, stupid… right?

The most basic and the easiest technique to pull off. Simply sit by the window and exhale outside.

Do keep in mind that a gust of wind could bring smoke back into your room just as you exhale it. To combat that, don’t fully open the window, a small crack will do the trick as it will pull the smoke out the second you exhale. You can take larger puffs, but not too big. Don’t want to irritate your windpipe and cough everything out.

It’s a good idea to use this method even if it’s called outside. Suck it up. The smell of marijuana is a strong smell, and once it gets all up into your apartment, you’ll never get it out – it sticks to your clothes, hard surfaces, and furniture. Make the problem disappear by blowing that vapor or smoke out in the first place!

#2 Filter From A Toilet Paper Roll / A Paper Towel

If you need something more reliable and you are living in a windy place, a DIY filter using a toilet paper roll or towel will do the trick. It’s an almost fail-proof method and easy to assemble.

All you need is an empty roll of paper, a Dryer sheet and a few rubber bands. If rubber bands are too strong/tight and morph the shape of the roll, you can also use hair bands as they tend to be a bit softer.

To use this device, slowly exhale into it and the amount of odor will be reduced to almost zero. Do keep in mind that if you exhale too much, a small amount of smoke might escape.

#3 Smoke Near A Candle or Fireplace

One of the best ways of hiding weed smell in your house is by using a scented candle. In case you didn’t know, open flame negates the smoke and, more importantly, odor. So, be sure to have a scented candle nearby as it not only kills the smoke but also covers up any unwanted smell.

If you run out of candles, any open flame will do. For example, sitting by a cozy fireplace will do the same trick. Do keep in mind that safety comes first when working with fire.

#4 Use Incense Sticks

Don’t burn too many… that’s suspicious in its own right!

This method is quite similar to the candle method but with a little twist. Incense smoke sticks don’t need any special preparation, and you can use them anytime, anywhere. On top of that, there are special incenses that are capable of completely getting rid of the weed smell.

#5 Invest in a Ceiling Fan, Air Purifier or a Carbon Filter

Personally, I’m not a huge box fan of ventilation when it comes to getting rid of cannabis odors. I just don’t think that any of these are a great option – they blow the smoke around, but don’t really get rid of it. Your air conditioner could be of use if it’s positioned the right way – to drive marijuana’s strong odor out of the window.

That said, you’re more than welcome to give all of those a try.

Maybe you don’t vape or smoke that much so it will work for you. Maybe the configuration of your house is different so this is the best thing for you. Maybe you’re a cigarette smoker and already have these so why not work with what’s there. Anyways, if you’re going with ventilation, make sure to open windows so the smell has somewhere to escape to.

A carbon filter might be an excellent way to do this if you’re taking this route. It won’t blow smoke around, and the charcoal inside will filter the marijuana smoke, so you get less smoke smell.

#6 Fruits And Herbs Mixtures

Looking for something more organic from natural sources that will help you with hiding the smell when vaping on weed? No worries, I got you covered. Lemon wedges, parsley, diced celery, and peppermint are your best friends when it comes to getting rid of the weed smell.

These ingredients have naturally strong scents and, when mixed together, they can cover up almost anything. I even use them just to freshen up my household a bit, not only after or during a session.

#7 Use White Vinegar

Here’s something that you probably wouldn’t think of by yourself – using white vinegar as an odor deodorizer!

It works great because it absorbed a range of different scents, such as cigarette smoke and weed smoke, and leaves your apartment odor-free. You can simply put out a few saucers of vinegar when you’re smoking or vaping to serve as an odor eliminator. The downside of this method is that it will leave your house smelling a bit weird, so it’s not the best option if you’re expecting guests.

But, if you do it a few days early and don’t smoke in that space again, no one will be able to smell anything — not even smokers, weed users, cannabis connoisseurs!

#8 Vaping While the Shower is Running

Let me stop you right there…

This method, also known as Hawaiian Hotbox, does not mean you need to take a shower while hiding weed smell in your house. The process is quite simple. Turn on the shower and set up high heat. The steam will nicely mask and dissolve any weed smells coming from you.

Another good trick that works hand in hand with this one is sealing the doors with a towel so nothing escapes the room. If you have a ventilating system in the bathroom, feel free to use it.

This method is quite effective but can get really hot really fast. Having a window might help you stay in a bit longer.

#9 A Smoke Filter Gets Rid of Weed Smell

Unlike, DIY paper roll filter, this one is a bit more sophisticated. Most of these weed smell filters use mesh made out of carbon to keep all smoke particles inside without leaking. If you want to know the best way to hide the smell of weed, this one is a top choice. Easy to use and affordable replacement mesh are two things that push this one to the top.

#10 A Freezer To Sneak A Hit In

A bit unorthodox method, but something you should definitely try is a sneaky Freezer Hit.

So, the play is pretty simple. You are craving a puff, simply shove your head into the freezer space, pull a fast one from your vaporizer or other marijuana product and that’s it. People might look at you weirdly, but no one will doubt or notice the difference between vapor and warm breath in the freezing cold.

I must say, the trick is awesome, but not for continuous use. Shoving your head in the freezer every 5 minutes will look weird as hell.

#11 Use Traditional Air Fresheners & Your Favorite Essential Oil

I have to say that this is not my preferred method of getting rid of the marijuana smell. I mean, when your home smells of patchouli, it’s pretty obvious what you’ve been doing, right? But, some cannabis users swear by this…. and I have to say that strong essential oils or a quick spray of a strong air freshener are both excellent ways to mask the unpleasant odor of the cannabis flower.

Just remember – don’t go overboard with it. Choose air fresheners with natural ingredients to get the best results for getting rid of weed odor.

#12 Go Outside to Avoid Smelling Up Your House

Probably the best and finest way is to do all this outside. Of course, if you are not comfortable doing it somewhere where people might see or smell you, simply take a little walk. Visit your nearest park, lake or simply take a stroll where it is not so public or you won’t bump into someone. Any of this will do perfectly. Keep in mind that smoking or vaping weed in your car also creates a ton of problems. Cars have this neutral natural odor that quickly gets drowned out by the smell of weed, and then you have to use chemicals to get rid of it. Don’t go there – stick to nature walks when using. That’s a great way to stay completely safe!

#13 Give Baking Soda a Try

Baking soda is great at absorbing the scent of weed!

The fact is that a bit of baking soda mixed with water – and placed in strategic places in your home when you’re smoking or vaping marijuana – can do wonders. That’s because backing soda draws in acidic smells, binds with them, and turns them into harmless and odorless gasses and salts.

Give it a try next time you’re using your weed vape pen and you’ll see.

#14 Odor-Absorbing Gels Are an Excellent Choice, Too

image of an odor absorbing gel
A couple of these will help if you smoke for recreational purposes…

They are, really.

You can find them all over the place – Walgreens, Target, Amazon. They won’t break the bank, but they’ll do a decent job at absorbing weed odors… and others, such as pet funk, bathroom funk, and similar. In the end, you can use them for more than covering your ass when you’re doing marijuana since they’re choke-full of essential oils and will lift up the smell in any house.

#15 Bake a Batch of Cookies!

Need I say more?

Cinnamon cookies are the best, scent-wise.

[Also, if you take this route often, send me an email. I’ll give you my address so you can send the cookies my way. After all, you only need the scent!]

What’s Your Favorite Way of Camouflaging Cannabis Odor?

In conclusion, most of us hate to deal with the stress of getting caught in an unpleasant situation while trying to relax. I must admit some people love the feeling of the unexpected, that intense moment when you sneak a puff in a nick of time before someone sees you. I personally can’t live with that amount of stress.

Luckily, there are plenty of ways on how to get rid of the smell of weed that I’ve lost count. As long as you are creative, you’ll do just fine.

Now, hop down into the comment section and let us know what’s your favorite way of getting rid of marijuana smell when vaping or smoking!

      Hey Clovia, that’s totally true!

The only problem is that most of us would need to have a batch ready for baking at all times! Oh… and personally, I would end up weighing a ton! 😀

Great tips! I have used all of these at some point in the last 15 years minus the vinegar. As far As using air fresheners/oils , some don’t necessarily mask the smell but instead blends with the smell of weed… my current issue is that when I use my ecigg / vape, my mom Swears that she smells the tobacco smell like a hint of actual cigarette smoke smell ?‍?

    • DanA says:

Fresheners tend to be that last minute solution that never works out quite like you’d hoped! 😀

That’s strange that your mom can smell cigarette smoke when you’re vaping – could it be that it’s just her brain playing tricks on her because she can see the vapor and *expects* to smell smoke?
