CBD Drops vs CBD Vape — Which Method Is Better for You?

The Kind Pen

Here’s the thing…

Cannabidiol (CBD) products are taking the world by storm. There are so many out there that I would be hard-pressed to find a single consumer food or cosmetics category that CBD hasn’t infiltrated.

And you would be hard-pressed to do that, too.

With so many different products out there, it’s only natural that people are confused about which types of dabs and CBD is good for them.

The biggest confusion (according to a flash survey I recently did among my friends) is about the difference between CBD drops and CBD vape.

Which method is better? And why?

And how do CBD vapes and CBD drops really stack up against each other?

That’s what this post aims to answer.

Ready to learn more about the difference between CBD oil and CBD e-liquid?

Great — let’s dig in!

Why is Everybody Going Loco for Cannabidiol (CBD)?

Who wouldn’t be thrilled by CBD and it’s awesome benefits?

Stressed from work? Grab some CBD…

Can’t sleep? A bit more CBD…

Your muscles ache after a long workout? You’ve guessed it… CBD again.

But, don’t take my word of it.

In 2016, a study published in The Permanente Journal tested the effectiveness of CBD oil on insomnia and anxiety in people suffering from the post-traumatic stress disorder.

The results were great. It was proven that CBD oils can, and will reduce insomnia and anxiety induced by PTSD. Even though it did not cure it, CBD oil surely helped a lot of patients who were able to finally sleep better. And be less anxious throughout the day.

Additionally, in 2019, a study showed that CBD oil can be used to suppress seizures.

Since CBD has proven to have anti-inflammatory properties, it has been shown to be beneficial for people with diabetes type 2. If you did not know, chronic inflammation can lead to insulin resistance, and the best way to settle insulin levels is to boost and improve metabolism.

Is CBD a miracle drug then?

Not really… but it’s as close as we’ve come to one.

Are CBD E-Liquid & CBD Oil the Same Thing?

CBD vape juice and CBD oil are not the same thing.

They both do contain CBD, but that is where they part ways.

CBD oils and tinctures contain things that you wouldn’t want to vape. They are also too thick for most common vaporizers, and can cause internal damage to your device.

Let’s take a closer look at how CBD oil and CBD vape juice are different (and similar).

What Are CBD Oils and Tinctures?

CBD oil is the product of hemp or cannabis extraction using alcohol or CO2.

In this process, many other forms of cannabinoids are present in that oil extract, but CBD has the highest concentration (of course, this also depends on the cannabis strain used).

After that first step, the product of extraction is diluted with a “carrier” oil like coconut, olive, or hemp seed oil. The carrier oil is necessary to make CBD easier to digest and absorb when used — and because pure CBD oil would cost an arm and a leg.

So, pretty much this is an oversimplified version of making CBD oil.

This type of oil is ingested orally, a few drops (depending on your requirements) under your tongue. After it absorbs completely you should wait approximately 30 to 60 minutes before you feel the first effects.

Now, I didn’t mention tinctures yet. How so?

Well, tinctures are a bit specific. The CBD is not extracted. Instead, high grade alcohol is used to steep the plant, allowing CBD to naturally dissolve in it. Tinctures are popular because they are easier to digest and they don’t taste as oily as CBD oils.

What is CBD E-Liquid?

Unfortunately, CBD oil in its raw form is too thick for it to be vaped.

Due to its viscosity, any pen or vaporizer won’t be able to turn it into vapor. Airflow would clog up and you can throw it in the trash.

That’s where CBD e-juices come in.

A CBD vape juice is a diluted version of CBD oil with vegetable glycerin (VG), propylene glycol (PG), and/or medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil.

If you are an experienced vaper some of these sound quite familiar, right?

Yep, PG and VG are the same baselines for all your vape juices.

These compounds make CBD oil less viscous and able to transform into vapor when heated.

Unlike CBD oil, when inhaling vapor, you will feel CBD effects almost immediately but they will last shorter, approx. 5 hours.

The Difference Between CBD E-Juice & CBD Oil

The Manufacturing Process

CBD is a compound found in hemp and cannabis. It is part of the plant and it needs to be extracted. In its natural state CBD is solid, and to make it easier to absorb and consume it needs to be diluted with carrier oils. Depending on the final product different types of oil are used. When making tinctures, the main ingredient is alcohol.

On the other hand, when making e-liquids VG, PG, and MCT oil are used. These carrier oils define how CBD will be ingested by the end user.

The Method of Ingestion

When buying CBD oil/tincture you plan on consuming it orally. And that is pretty much it.

Please don’t try to vape it because you will ruin both oil and your device. And we both know devices can cost quite a lot. If you decide to purchase CBD vape juice you can inhale it as much as you want.

Any CBD product that has “oil” in its name should be ingested through the mouth. Likewise, any other CBD product that has “liquid” in its name is for inhaling. Any respectable seller will know this, but just in case. There is no CBD vape oil…It’s either CBD vape juice, e-liquid, vape liquid, or some kind of mix of these. If you see something like CBD vape oil, speak to someone and check if that’s legit stuff.  The best-case scenario is that it’s written wrong and the manufacturer will change it in time. Worst case scenario, it is oil and you will ruin your pen or vaporizer.

Time to Effect

On top of everything, I mentioned earlier CBD oils and e-liquids work slightly differently.

Let me start with CBD vape liquids.

Inhaling vapor means your lungs fill up with CBD making it easier for it to enter your bloodstream. The result of this is faster CBD delivery throughout your body. With this method, you will feel CBD effects faster, in less than 30 seconds. Sounds great when you need that fast relaxed zone starter.

BUT…

The downside is that you will feel the effects of CBD somewhere around 5 hours straight. If you have chronic insomnia and you plan on sleeping 8 hours, inhaling CBD might not be the perfect solution.

Now, let’s talk about CBD oil/tinctures.

Consuming CBD oil is pretty straightforward. All you need to do is fill up the pipette, and release a few drops under your tongue. The reason why you need to do it like that is; since you plan on ingesting oil, the sublingual membrane absorbs oils faster into your bloodstream. Even though in comparison to inhalation, the whole process seems faster, the first effects of CBD will be felt after 30 to 60 minutes after ingesting it. On the flip side, once effects kick in, they will last for at least 12 hours.

How They Taste

In its crude form, CBD oil does not have a specific flavor, per se. It’s more oily than anything.

Even quite unpleasant when I think about it. Luckily, whether you plan on eating it or vape it, there is a version of CBD where it smells and tastes like marshmallow, and honey, and chocolate, and… ok, I’ll stop before munchies attack.

My point is; CBD oil is completely modified to provide maximum pleasure to your taste buds as it will provide maximum relief to your whole body.

The Pros (& Cons) of CBD Vape Juice & CBD Oil

To be fully honest with you, both CBD oil and CBD vape juice are great products and one should not exclude the other. But, if you are currently in a tight spot and need to choose one over the other I’ll list for you all pros and cons of both CBD products. Hopefully, it will make your decision easier.

The pros and cons of CBD oil:

Pros

  • Less distinct
  • More convenient
  • Versatile in strengths
  • Does not require any special devices (cheaper)

Cons

  • Requires more time to activate
  • Dosage varies from person to person

The pros and cons of CBD vape juice:

Pros

  • Faster activation
  • A wider range of flavors and strengths
  • Easier to buy in smaller batches

Cons

  • Noticeable due to vapor
  • More expensive if you need to buy a device
  • Limited consumption outside your home (smoking banned)

Are CBD Tinctures & Oils Safe to Vape?

Definitely not.

You should never use CBD oils in your vape device.

They are not safe for your device. And they are not safe for you.

To put it simply, oils are too thick therefore vaporizers are not able to heat them enough and produce vapor. Your device will get clogged up and it will malfunction.

There’s a reason why people didn’t stop at oils, and why we have vape juice at our disposal.

Believe me, you don’t want to waste a completely functioning pen.

The Verdict — CBD Oil or CBD Vape Juice?

So, back to the question at hand — CBD vape juice or CBD oil?

Well, that’s gonna depend on what you need it for.

CBD vape juice acts faster, so it’s great for acute pain or anxiety attacks. But… it’s also noticeable because it produces vapor, so it’s not the best stealth option.

On the other hand, CBD oils are slow-acting. They’re great for treating chronic conditions such as insomnia or similar… but they might be too slow for curbing an anxiety attack.

My suggestion is to go with both if you need to. If you need your CBD to act fast, use a vaporizer. If you can wait for the effect, a tincture or an oil will be a great fit.
