What’s a Gravity Bong (& The #1 Reason Why Our Automatic Glass G-Bong Beats Every Homemade Device)

image of a smoke pouring out of a bottle into a glass

The first time I took a hit from a gravity bong, I woke up in shabby rattan chair on my back porch in pitch dark, covered with a large pink and yellow beach towel with my shoes neatly placed on the coffee table next to me.

That was a looong, long time ago.

Today, I have more of a high tolerance, thankfully (or not… depending on how you look at it).

But why am I telling you this?

Well, gravity bongs (or, as we call them on our website, gravity infusers) are all the rage now, and – if you’re here reading this article – you probably want to know more about them, right?

You’re in the right place!

After reading this post, you’ll know exactly what these devices are, how to use one, and how to make one at home (using just a couple of plastic bottles, aluminum foil, and a pair of scissors).

Or – if you’re not the one to fiddle with a homemade gravity bong – you’ll also get all the juicy details about our brand new Kind Pen addition, a glass gravity bong that’s 100% automatic and battery-operated.

This means no manual operation… no messing with buckets of water… and no losing time between hits!

But I’m getting ahead of myself here.

You want to know what a grav bong is and how hard it hits?

Let’s dig in!

What is a Gravity Bong?

A gravity bong is a makeshift bong made out of plastic bottles.

It uses negative pressure and gravity (surprise, surprise) to collect cannabis smoke in one of the bottles, allowing the user to inhale large quantities into their lungs. It’s also called a bucket bong (if you’re using a bucket full of water instead of a larger bottle), geebs, gravs, or jeebs (if you were of smoking age in the early nineties).

Here’s a picture of a relatively functional grav:

You can see why they call it a bucket bong, right?

How Do G-Bongs Work?

Now, your run of the mill makeshift gravity bongs need very little to work – two empty plastic bottles, some tin foil for the bowl, and bottle.

After cutting those single-use plastic bottles using scissors or a box cutter, you simply submerge the smaller bottle into a larger bottle (that you fill with water beforehand).

Once you have the small bottle submerged all the way to the bottom, the next step is to add your tin foil bowl filled with bits of flower to the cap. As you add flame to the cannabis, you slowly draw out the upper bottle – it starts to fill up with smoke pretty quickly thanks to the water pressure and air pressure creating negative pressure – vacuum – that causes the bowl to light up and the weed inside to burn quicker. So the water draws the smoke in through the bottle’s cap and the weed smoke collects at the bottom of the bottle.

The last thing left to do is remove the bowl, place your mouth over the cap, and inhale while pushing down back into the water. The smoke will instantly rush to your lungs, giving you a good hit… that might knock you over if you’re not ready, so watch it!

Most homemade G-bongs can be a bit messy, but they do have several key advantages when compared to traditional bongs.

So here are the main benefits of getting high with a grav:

  • They’re great for special occasions and parties – these things create enough smoke to wipe out a dozen smokers in just a few hits.
  • They can be reused – you will need to change out the aluminum foil if it rips from use but, other than that, these things can last (no need to clean it like a glass bubbler or a regular bong).
  • They hit like a mule that’s never missed a leg day – remember I told you at the beginning of this that my shoes were on the coffee table? I was so baked, I have no idea why I took them off.

Of course, the downside here is that it goes through an entire bowl of cannabis in a flash.

But still, there’s a lot going for G-bongs that makes regular bongs green with envy.

But the one thing that’s better than a makeshift gravity bong – by an order of magnitude in this case – is our fully automatic, battery-operated grav bong we call GravIX:

GravIX also comes in black and silver… but this blue is something, right?

GravIX has so much going for it.

It makes your sessions easier – because it’s rotating on its own, you don’t have to lift a finger once you set it up. With bottles, you need to punch in small holes to let the air escape. You need to set up each hit. And there’s a big chance you’ll end up covered with bong water at some point.

With GravIX gravity infuser, there’s none of that. You simply fill it up, turn it on, and let it work its magic. Every 20 seconds, it fills up with smoke and it’s time to get another hit!

Also, this thing is a looker – a conversation starter piece & will be the center of attention at every social event you throw together.

But, on a more serious note, it’s 100% safe to use… unlike plastic homemade bongs.

The Dangers of Using Homemade Bongs

Apart from getting so baked you lose your shoes?

The biggest issue is that you’ll mostly be using single-use plastic bottles, which contain stuff like PETE or PET (nasty plastic compounds that can do serious damage to your lungs.). So, unless you’re an experienced glass blower and can make a glass gravity bong (like GravIX), you need to be very careful when using these. That means making sure you don’t have your open flame too close to the bottle cap (because it will melt), the dangers of microplastic – small pieces that constantly shed from plastic bottles – are ever-present.

The risk of health hazards or injury is generally minute here – most of us don’t use G-bongs that often. But, if you plan on hitting it on a regular basis, it pays to invest in more permanent – and safer – option.

Do You Get a More Intense High With a Gravity Bong?

Yes. A thousand times yes.

With a G-bong – even if you’re using a small water bottle and a smaller chamber (so a small piece of tin foil) – you still get huge hits. That’s the great thing about it – it basically means you can instantly obliterate a whole gram of marijuana in a single draw. That’s a whole lot of THC hitting your lungs in one go.

Of course, that’s also a bad thing if you’re a beginner.

A hit from a gravity bong is not for the uninitiated.

You can still tailor the experience by packing in less marijuana flower for the people partaking. But the force of a grav hit – much like the force of gravity – is pretty much inevitable.

So be smart and safe when using this.

13 Steps to Making a Grav Bong at Home

Making your own gravity bong that will serve its purpose is relatively straightforward.

You’ll need the following items, household materials and tools:

  • 1 small water bottle (a soda bottle will work too)
  • 1 larger container (a bigger bottle… or a bucket of water)
  • 1 piece of aluminum foil (size depending on whether you want a larger chamber or a small chamber)
  • scissors or a box cutter tool
  • 0.1 ounce of marijuana flower (at least)
  • 1 marijuana smoker friend willing to throw caution to the wind (at least)

I won’t go into a full write up of the process here, but here’s a VICE video with an efficient way to design and make your own factory of (nearly) too much smoke:

[Click on ‘Watch on YouTube since the video is age-restricted]

Basically, all you have to do is find the right size bottles (or other items), cut everything to size, and add small holes for ease of use during your smoke session, and that’s it.

If you’re not a video person, here’s a nice research blog article from WikiHow on how to make a G-bong in 13 (!) easy steps. Dang, WikiHow… great way to add a bit of complexity to something that can be done in 5 minutes flat!

EXTRA TIP: There are several different types of gravity bongs… and one that’s even easier to make than the one in the video. This one is called a waterfall bong. It’s a bottle with a hole in the bottom, really. Still, this type of gravity bong works and it does deliver large hits, as you can see from the diagram below.

Ready to Upgrade Your Bonging Experience?

As you can tell, there’s really nothing to making a geeb on your own.

So if you’re a veteran cannabis user ready to spice up your smoking experience, I say go for it!

Make one at home – if you haven’t already – and give it a whirl. It’s good time guaranteed.

And what if you end up liking it? Or you’ve already tried it and want to make it a staple of your smoke sessions.

Well, in that case, give our new technology marvel – the GravIX – a try.
