Already-vaped cannabis – or as it’s known more affectionately, already vaped bud (AVB) – is the leftover weed from your vape sessions.
In most cases, this used up brownish material that you so carelessly toss out of your vape chamber is not trash. There are effective ways to reuse it, to squeeze every last drop of goodness out of those valuable cannabinoids and other active ingredients.
In this post, I’ll show you 11 different ways to do just that:
- Infusions
- Edibles
- Canna capsules
- Tinctures
- Weed coffee
- Weed tea
- Crackers
- Spice
- Topicals
- Concentrates
- Smoking it again
NOTE: We’ll dive straight into these bonus uses because I want you to get the goods you’re after straight away. Still, read until the end of the post to find out why not all vaped marijuana is created equal & why water-curing is important if you’re making infusions or delicious edibles.
Let’s dig in.

11 Most Popular Ways to Reuse Your Vape Weed
#1 Infusions are the bedrock of weed edibles
Infusions are one of the most popular ways to use already-vaped bud. Because the material that comes out of your weed vape is already decarboxylated, these infusions take a fraction of time to make. There are several different types of infusions that can be made with already-vaped bud, including butter, oil, and honey infusions. All these can later be added to edibles, skin creams, and even essential oils (not to be vaped, mind you – that’s what fresh bud is for).
- AVB cannabutter – this is one of the most popular home products… and the easiest way to use your vaped weed, of course. First thing, melt butter in a saucepan on low heat, add your marijuana, and let it simmer for about 30-45 minutes. Add a bit of cocoa to get edible cocoa butter. After it’s all done, strain it away, put it in jars, and place it in a dark, cool place. Voila! You have yourself a batch of cannabis butter or AVB butter!
- AVB coconut oil – or any other neutral oil, such as canola, sunflower, almond, or olive oil. The process is the same as when making infused butter. You can use this oil to make other delicious edibles, for salad dressings, and similar. If you’re using infused coconut oil, it can be incorporated into salves, ointments, and similar. The best way to store this cannabis oil is in a dark place at room temperature.
- Infused honey – follow the same steps as above. Make a point of consistently stirring the honey – it’s a bit more fickle than oil and butter, and can burn easily, so make sure it spends less time just burning away. After it’s done, store it in the fridge – cannabis users will appreciate a dollop of this with their morning coffee or tea!
#2 Baked edibles such as brownies and cookies
A stick of butter by itself isn’t exactly a delightful treat, right?
So brownies and cookies it is then!
When you have ABV butter, it’s pretty easy to make a batch of delicious edibles bursting with flavor. Just proceed as if you’re making a super regular batch of sweets, and then add your cannabutter to the mixture instead of regular butter. To improve the taste and avoid bitterness, you can also add a dollop of infused honey.
Careful when eating, though – your batch can contain too much THC , and you don’t want to get baked from one bite!
#3 Cannabis capsules are easy and discrete
Maybe you’re one of those people who don’t like to advertise their use of marijuana?
That’s perfectly okay – there are always capsules you can use!
Basically, you take empty gel capsules and you add your AVB weed to them. These empty capsules are great because they’re quick and discrete. The best part is that you won’t taste your vaped weed at all, so you don’t have to worry about the bitterness. That said, you can add infusions in there as well – a bit of fat content (if you’re using butter or oil) will combine with THC and CBD, and allow your body to metabolize the cannabinoids faster.
All in all, a great covert method of using…. without anybody being any wiser.
#4 Tinctures are for the patient among us…
A tincture is a great way to get concentrated THC into your body… but there’s not a ton of it in ABV weed. right? Plus, in order to get a decent % of cannabinoids in there so you can figure out the dosage, you’ll need a lot of leftovers. And you’ll need to fiddle with high-proof grain alcohol. And maybe even an extra extraction process, depending on the quality you’re aiming for.
So possible? Yes. Worth your time? Probably not.
#5 Weed coffee has never been easier…
There’s nothing to it…
Just plop that ABV weed into the coffee grounds before making a cuppa, and you’re good to go. I suggest going through a round of water cure if you want to get good taste, but it’s not necessary – you can mask that with a strong coffee flavor like hazelnut or caramel. Alternatively, a few grams of AVB butter or milk.
#6 Infused tea is even easier…
Add AVB to your tea leaves and let them soak before serving. It’s a good idea to choose a tea with a robust taste, and enhance it by adding some honey. If you do that, you won’t have to worry about the bitter taste of your vaped weed. However, as mentioned, it’s best to water-cure all AVB weed you plan to use in edibles and infusions (more on that when you come to the end of this post).
#7 These AVB crackers are to die for
Another great recipe for AVB edibles – cackers!
This method trumps all others when it comes to how much work is needed to make cannabis edibles.
Just spread some vaped marijuana on some graham crackers, sandwich them together, then top with some peanut butter. Bake them at a high temperature for about 10-15 minutes after wrapping them with aluminum foil.
#8 ABV is the spice of life…
Collect it. Cure it. Dry it.
And then just sprinkle it all over your food.
Seriously… this is the easiest way to use your leftover weed. Add it to salad dressings. To spice mixes for your chicken and veggies and other food. And as a bit of a kick to your morning smoothies.
You won’t regret it.
#9 Go big with topicals…
Topicals are another great way to use already-vaped bud.
Now, since you already know how to make infused oils, you’re good to go!
- Salves – you’ll need to combine the infused oil with melted beeswax and a few drops of essential oils. Don’t be afraid to use a lot of your leftovers here – since you’re applying it to your skin – and probably for a medical reason – you want as much potency as you can get.
- Creams and lotions – combine your infused oil with a carrier oil, like almond or jojoba, and a few drops of fragrant essentials. Once all the ingredients are combined, you can either store them in a container in the refrigerator or pour them into molds and let them cool and solidify.
#10 Concentrates are an option, too…
Yes, you can go bananas and make concentrates like RSO and other wax concentrates from your leftover cannabis. However, the purity of this creation will not be comparable to using fresh flowers and buds. Still, the remaining cannabinoids in here can be beneficial for treating minor muscle pains and similar.
#11 Technically, you can smoke AVB…
Honestly, this is a last resort kind of a thing.
I don’t consider it a good use of AVB… and I wouldn’t do it if I were you. It’s going to taste harsh… bitter… and you won’t get wasted. You will – very likely – end up with a headache, though.
When it comes to smoking, you should go with fresh cannabis flower. Always.
But, as I said… you can certainly try.
Remember – Not All AVB is Created Equal
There’s AVB… and there’s AVB.
Not everything that comes out of your vape pen after a session will be reusable. The potency of your AVB will depend on several factors. The first factor is how you vaporize – conduction or convection? Convection is better because it doesn’t burn the plant matter (it also provides you with great taste… and way fewer errant combustibles).
Now, the next factor is the temperature.
You want to make sure you’re vaping between 315-440°F. That will leave some of the cannabinoid goodness inside the cannabis bud. On higher temperatures, you’re basically scorching your goods. And they’re not really reusable afterwards.
The last factor is the potency of your cannabis flower. At the end of the day, your leftover flower will be stronger if you started out with a killer bud – the more THC and CBD you start with, the more is available after the vaping process.
So to make sure you get a good ABV, don’t expose your flower to high heat… don’t burn it… and start off with a high THC/CBD content.
PRO TIP: Before Reusing Vaped Weed for Infusions & Edibles, Consider Water-Curing
This here is an important prep step that you’ll want to follow if you’re making any infusions or edibles with your AVB. Any end product intended for ingestion will have a too strong flavor and come with a ladle-full of bitterness that will mess up your experience… unless you take a couple of days to prep your weed after a vape session.
Water-curing is a process of using water to extract and remove the impurities from already-vaped bud (AVB). This is used to improve the flavor, aroma, and potency of the AVB weed, and remove the bitter taste.
- Place the AVB in a jar and fill the jar with cool, distilled water.
- Let the jar sit for 5-6 hours, stirring it occasionally.
- After that, drain the material and add a cup of water again.
- Repeat step two and three a few more times with fresh water.
- Once you’ve finished rinsing, spread the AVB on a baking sheet and let it dry.
Water cure is a great process to use if you’re working with small quantities. If you’re using larger quantities, you can make things easier on yourself by wrapping the used plant material in a cheesecloth and submerging it in water. Change the water as often as possible for 4-5 days, or a week… but not longer. After that, spread out the AVB on a baking tray and dry it out on a lower temperature for 30-40 minutes (having moisture inside is an easy way to make it go bad and moldy quick). Make sure to store it in a dry, dark place if you’re not going to use it all immediately.
